Division: Son of Envy

Arc: Buzzutsu Academy

Date: September 4, 2024

Location: Government Facility

Overview

A government lab’s cursed specimen escapes, killing researchers and destabilizing the facility. Buzzutsu Academy first-years Troy, Diego, and Nicole deploy with Captain Zeke Delmar and Dr. Mrchofrey to locate and incapacitate the target. The team is separated by a security gate trap; flooding begins as the facility’s underwater containment protocols activate, and evidence suggests the lockdown is not accidental. In a desperate final engagement, Nicole identifies blood as the curse’s fuel, Diego improvises a blood-draining construct, and the team prevents the curse from healing long enough to contain it—resulting in a mysterious giant egg. Dr. Mrchofrey and Purge Corps immediately seize control of the aftermath and silence the students.

Detailed Plot Summary

Troy, Nicole, and Diego are summoned to Mr. C’s office, where they meet Dr. Mrchofrey of the Department of Supernatural Research and Captain Ezekiel “Zeke” Delmar of the Purge Corps. They learn that Buzzutsu Academy is federally subsidized and obligated to assist military operations. A cursed specimen has escaped containment within a government research facility, killing multiple researchers. The team is tasked with locating and incapacitating the target. Using the academy’s think tank, they teleport to a corresponding chamber inside the damaged facility.

Upon arrival, they discover blood-stained corridors, destroyed security systems, and mutilated bodies showing signs of deliberate harvesting—major muscle groups removed and bone marrow scraped. The containment chamber reveals heavy experimentation, including mechanized restraint arms and pools of blood and feathers. Nicole challenges Dr. Mrchofrey’s ethics, but before tensions can escalate further, a screech echoes through the facility. The team splits up: Zeke, Troy, and Nicole pursue the curse, while Diego is sent with Mrchofrey to restore backup power.

As they track the creature, Nicole is suddenly sealed off by a descending security gate triggered from above. Troy attempts to break through but fails. Zeke reveals critical withheld information: the facility is an underwater containment structure two miles below the surface, and failed lockdown procedures trigger rapid flooding. Meanwhile, Diego successfully activates the generator but is trapped in lockdown and attacked by a swarm of imp-like curses. Forced to improvise, he escapes using constructs that inadvertently rupture part of the facility’s hull, accelerating flooding.

Nicole encounters Dr. Kafka, a surviving scientist, who explains that lockdown will only end once cursed activity is neutralized. Kafka is abruptly killed by the escaped specimen: a towering humanoid creature with a chicken’s head, sewn-shut eyes, and blood-soaked feathers—later dubbed “Chicken Man.” Nicole narrowly escapes, plants a bookunai in the creature, and retrieves classified documentation referencing the “Sunrise Project.” While psychically probing the curse’s mind, she repeatedly hears a single word: “Father.”

Troy and Zeke reunite with Diego as flooding intensifies. They follow residual cursed energy and encounter Chicken Man in combat with Nicole’s shikigami, Jingle. The curse brutally tears Jingle apart and demonstrates rapid regeneration far beyond what low-level curses should possess. During combat, Diego is severely injured, and the team struggles to counter the creature’s healing ability.

Nicole deduces that Chicken Man’s regeneration is fueled by blood, explaining the surgical nature of the victims’ injuries. As flooding reaches critical levels and Zeke reveals the facility is also rigged to explode if deemed unsalvageable, the team executes a coordinated plan. Diego deploys a construct that drains the curse’s blood, preventing regeneration. Zeke and Troy strike in tandem, volleying the weakened curse between them while it is unable to heal. Though Troy exhausts himself nearly to collapse, the blood depletion renders Chicken Man unstable.

Nicole dives deeper into the curse’s consciousness and reaches a glowing internal “heart,” where she encounters an infant-like presence radiating power and repeating the word “Father.” She is forcibly expelled from the mental space as facility systems deactivate. Flooding ceases, and instead of dying, the curse manifests as a massive egg devoid of leaking cursed energy.

Troy attempts to shatter the egg but fails; it appears to redirect or nullify cursed energy defensively. Zeke carries the egg back to Dr. Mrchofrey, who expresses satisfaction at its condition and dismisses the team. Troy confronts the Doctor over the deaths of the researchers, while Nicole accuses him of orchestrating the lockdown and flooding to preserve his experiment. Zeke blocks further confrontation, declaring the matter under Purge Corps jurisdiction and ordering the students to leave.

Before departing, Nicole taunts Mrchofrey by implying the curse spoke to her, provoking visible concern. The team returns to Buzzutsu Academy battered and shaken. Troy secretly keeps the red comb torn from Chicken Man’s head as a reminder of the mission. Though alive, all three are left deeply affected by the cover-up, the mysterious “Father,” and the unresolved implications of the Sunrise Project.
